History of the Optimist Junior Golf Program

Since 1978, Optimist-sponsored golf tournaments have served as a springboard for many of golf’s greatest players. Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Jason Day, Jeff Overton, Billy Horschel, Tiger Woods, Lexi Thompson, Brittany Lincicome, Michelle McGann and Nancy Lopez are just a few of the elite players who have started their careers at Optimist Junior Golf events.

No other junior golf tournament quite compares to that of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships (commonly referred to as THE OPTIMIST), which focuses on fair competition and cultural understanding among the players and their families.

This world-class event originated in 1968 when three leaders of the San Diego County Junior Golf Association—Norrie West, Mrs. A.S. Smith and John Brown—carried out an idea of Brown’s by forming Junior World Golf. “I just thought it would be a great thing if young people from throughout the world could meet each other and play with each other in an international junior golf tournament,” Brown said.

That first year, Junior World drew entries from six foreign nations: Pakistan, Canada, Mexico, Thailand, Portugal and the Philippines. In all, 475 golfers came from 20 states and seven nations. Then, in 1978, through the action of Dudley Williams, a lifelong San Diego resident and soon-to-be President of Optimist International, the Optimists became a sponsor of the event, thus creating “Optimist Junior World.” Through this partnership, Optimist International began holding qualifying tournaments for 15 to 17-year-olds across the United States and Canada. As a result, 55 tournaments drew more than 3,500 entrants.

In an effort to expand the tournament, Optimist International moved the event to South Florida’s Doral Country Club in 1995 and renamed the event the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships (THE OPTIMIST). The plan proved so successful that after only one year, the event moved again to a more suitable location at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens where its currently being held.

THE OPTIMIST continues to be one of the most recognizable junior tournaments in the world with more than 6,000 golfers, ages 10-18, participating in qualifying tournaments each year. THE OPTIMIST .holds three phases to accommodate the increasing number of participants, (phase 1-Boys 10-11, 12-13 and Girls 10-12), (phase 2-Boys 14-15 and Girls 13-14), (Phase 3-Boys 16-18 and Girls 15-18). Annually more than 660 of the best junior golfers, representing more than 30 nations, 45 states and six Canadian provinces, converge for a week of unsurpassed competition and fellowship. What makes us unique from other tournaments, participants and their guests are housed, play golf, enjoy group meals, special events, entertainment and fun all at a world-class resort. College coaches come from all over the country to scout some of the best junior players in the world.

Here in Colorado, we are holding qualifying tournaments in June to determine who will be our 41 qualifiers going to THE OPTIMIST at PGA National.

The Colorado-Wyoming District Optimist Junior Golf Program’s website is  A lot of information about the District Junior Golf Program is available at that website.
In addition, each year in November, the Optimist Tournament of Champions takes place at PGA National Resort and Spa. An invitational event featuring the top finishers from Optimist Championships, District qualifiers and other top junior golf events. The inaugural Tournament of Champions took place in Miami, Florida in December 2005 on the Blue Monster course at Doral Golf Resort & Spa. The Tournament of Champions is a 36 hole event for male and female junior golfers ages 11-18.

The Optimist Junior Golf program also offers the Optimist Junior Golf Tour Events: These 36-hole events are for male and female junior golfers ages 11-18. These are additional qualifiers for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships and ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard. Tour Event locations include Myrtle Beach, SC, Orlando, FL, Ft. Worth, Texas, Ontario, Canada and Denver, Colorado.

Save Green with Fore Golf Program, courtesy of South Suburban Parks & Recreation

By Diana Rowe

A Denver Golf Expo tradition, South Suburban Parks & Recreation is returning to the 2017 Expo, continuing the tradition of saving green on its Fore Golf Program.

“With very different courses with varying design and difficulty, our courses are designed to appeal to all ages and levels of golfers,” says Bill Ramsey, Director of Gold at South Suburban Parks & Recreation. “Likely, you’ve already experienced golf here – and you’ll have the unique opportunity to experience it again, included in the cost of your admission.  We are returning this year with our Fore Golf Program, a progressive golf experience FREE to Expo attendees.”

Debuting in 2012, the Fore Golf Program continues to add value to the admission into the Denver Golf Expo. Every Expo registrant receives these South Suburban golf deals, beginning in February through May.

South Suburban Golf Course offers 2 different experiences: a quick 9-hole par 3 round or an 18-hole par 72 course with rolling fairways and large undulating greens. The South Suburban Parks & Recreation also brings players an 18-hole executive course at Littleton Golf & Tennis Club and the Arnold Palmer 18-hole championship course at the Lone Tree Club & Hotel. And finally, the Family Sports Golf Course features an excellent 9-hole executive course with a large heated and lighted year-round driving range.

Perhaps the biggest news is that South Suburban Golf Corse is undergoing a complete club house, pro shop and restaurant renovation. Bill Ramsey says, “This renovation will be completed sometime in the spring, debuting enlarged space, brand new look inside and out, and a patio and deck area overlooking the golf course.

Denver Golf Expo attendees, be sure to stop by the South Suburban Parks & Recreation booth 446-447 to spin the wheel and win some great prizes.

Serving Wynkoop Craft Beers at the Denver Golf Expo

The 2017 Denver Golf Expo will officially serve a selection of craft beers Wynkoop Brewing Company®,where they believe brewing is an art.

It all started in 1988 when LoDo had no ballpark, no valet parking, no farm-to-table restaurants. Just four guys who wanted to make really good beer. Those four guys were John Hickenlooper, Jerry Williams, Mark Schiffler and Russell Schehrer. They opened the first craft Brewery in Denver on Skid Row in the century-old J. S. Brown Mercantile Building. They built a bar by the building’s old vault, and another bar in the back of the building’s expansive showroom. They installed a small brewhouse on the main floor. They placed 22 pool tables on the second floor and called it Wynkoop Billiards. Beer drinkers across the state braved the sketchy ghost town that was LoDo in the late 80’s for billiards and pints of Russell’s unexpected beer styles. He was one of the first professional brewers in the country to try his hand at mead-making, doppel alt, and cream stout. He was honored by the Brewers Association when he passed with the Russell Schehrer. Award for Innovation in Brewing, awarded each year at the Craft Brewers Conference to a brewer who knocks down doors.

Almost thirty years later, Wynkoop is a Denver institution, still known for innovative, ballsy brewers who put just about anything in their beer, including Rocky Mountain oysters, gummy bears and green chiles. It’s known as the brewery that brewed a neighborhood because—without exaggeration—the Wynkoop helped catalyze the revitalization of LoDo. To-date, our neighborhood is the heartbeat of the city, surrounded by iconic landmarks like Coors Field, Larimer Square, and the recently renovated Union Station across Wynkoop Street. We like to think it all began with beer.

Even better, at the Denver Golf Expo, Wynkoop Brewing  Company will be pouring 6 of their craft beers for attendees:

Uber Lager

Rail Yard Amber ale

Wixa Wiess Wheat

Hoppy Kolsch

Belgorado Belgian IPA

Nug Life IPA

So, stop by and order your favorite Wynkoop craft beer at the Wynkoop Beer Garden.
